EC Masud: Presidential Election Schedule to be Announced Soon

Following the resignation of President Md. Shahabuddin, an election for the vacant presidential post will be held within 90 days, as per the constitution. To this end, the Election Commission (EC) will soon announce the schedule for the presidential election.

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahman Masud informed the media about this on Friday (July 24).

He stated that, according to Article 123 of the Constitution, a new president must be elected within 90 days of the presidential office becoming vacant. The President resigned on July 24. The election will be held within the stipulated time frame, as per the Presidential Election Act, 1991. The Chief Election Commissioner will serve as the returning officer for this election.

As per the Constitution, the 350 members of the National Parliament will be considered voters for the presidential election. The Election Commission will prepare an electoral roll with them. Following this, the schedule for the presidential election will be announced.

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahman Masud stated that the schedule for the presidential election would be announced in a similar manner to that of the reserved women’s seats election. If there are multiple candidates, a poll will be held. If there is only one candidate, they will be declared elected unopposed.

Due to Saturday being a weekly holiday, the regular activities of the Election Commission will be closed. Consequently, the Commission may decide on the presidential election schedule next Sunday or on a subsequent day.

Regarding this, Election Commissioner Abdur Rahman Masud said, ‘The schedule for the presidential election will be announced very soon.’
